We will be needing a new couch soon, the old one is worn and the boards are breaking. It seems nothing is built a solid as it used to be.
So, I’ve decided I’d like to build my own couch. Something made from wood so I can make it the length I want with the angles I want and the height I want (6’4” husband).
And if it’s made from a combination of 2x4’s and 1x4’s – it’s easily repairable or easily disassembled and reassembled.
And I can make cushions in any “puffiness” or “firmness” with whatever covering we choose. We could have a durable everyday ticking fabric and a more decorative “guest” covers.
Having 3 kitties in the house – if they happen to scratch a leg – well that’s okay that leg is now inexpensive and replaceable. Hair on the cushions? No problem, take that cover off and wash it. I can make the covers easy to put on and take off. And with the price of 2x4x8’s as $0.98 each – I can build my couch for much less than buying one new.
There are a few plans on the internet for chairs like the one pictured above. I intend to build a chair first – and have DH test it out for height, width, and angles. Then I’ll extend it. If it works out well – I’ll make a loveseat size and a sofa size.
Check out Ready Made and 2822 Shop. I found some plans for chairs, foot stools, and even a small center coffee table with storage inside. It’ll be fun – a daughter father project when building the furniture itself and a daughter mother project when we start on the cushions.

(I even found a pattern for a rolling compost bin from East Texas Gardening … I’ll build that after the couch is done.)

you are one ambitious lady!! but you're right, you can make it the size you want and put whatever firmness and fabric. very ambitious!!
Wow! I've come to the realization that I'm better off spending money on things that would cause me too much stress to build! ;)
